What is a direct message (DM)?

In online communications, a direct message (DM) is used to refer to the private exchange of messages that are sent directly from one user to another user. You can send and receive direct messages (DMs) using the messaging services on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and others. On older applications, private message (PM) describes a similar private communication between users.
